Moth World Champion and Mach 2 Sailor Bora Gulari wins Rolex US Yachtsman of the year!
Rolex Yachtsman of the Year – Bora Gulari (Detroit, Mich.) has been named US SAILING’s 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, earning the coveted award with his very first appearance on the shortlist of nominees. Gulari had tough competition for the honor: all but one of the 10 male nominees, Gulari included, had won a world championship title. Ultimately, 10 of the 14 panel members gave Gulari their first-place vote, acknowledging his growth from square one in the Moth class two years ago to winner of the CST Composites International Moth World Championship in 2009 as nothing short of remarkable. Although many sailors compete for years in a class before making it to the elite level, Gulari won his first Moth world championship his second time out and became the first American in 33 years to claim the class’ world title. One of the panel members witnessed the first two days of competition at the worlds and attested to the high level of talent in the Moth class, while another panelist felt that the sport was witnessing a watershed moment in terms of the class taking off in the U.S. In existence since 1929, the Moth is a development class with a design rule that has remained basically unchanged, while the craft has gone from a home-built, flat-bottomed skiff to the current version incorporating hydrofoils on which the craft flies across the water.
“I just do this because I love it, and I think this year was the start of great things to come for dinghy sailing in the U.S.,” said Gulari. “With the addition of the foils, the Moths became easier to sail and a lot more rewarding. . . generating a level of excitement for sailing in some of the top sailors in the country that I have not seen before. I don’t think it will take people away from traditional dinghy classes, but the Moth is so fun that it's attracting people that have never had any interest in dinghies, and its bringing people back to dinghies who thought they were done getting wet.”
Well done Bora!

Winning prestigious award Bora enjoyed comments from the many voters like 'Here comes the Robbie Nash of sailing'
Cast your vote for Andrew McDougall here http://sailor.seahorsemagazine.com/seahorse-sailor-of-the-month.html
Seahorse Magazine say "It is hard to think of any one person who has contributed more than McDougall to the phenomenon which the foiler International Moth has now become and the subsequent and increasingly broad impact that it is exerting on sailing. McDougall’s most important contribution is in bringing the foiler discipline to the wider marketplace with his carefully developed yet fully competitive off-the-shelf designs"

Mach 2's take top three places in race 4 of Moth European Championships!
Moth European Championship, Horsens Denmark and the race officer held the fleet on shore in the hope that the wind and waves would die down.
The wind dropped to sailable conditions and the race started with the Moths screaming upwind lead by current European Champion Arnaud Psarofaghis. The Swiss was first around the windward mark followed by countryman Jean-Pierre Ziegert. Britain’s Simon Payne and Mike Lennon were next. Psarofaghis and Payne extended and as he closed the gap Payne pitchpoled on the run and was overtaken by Eelco Boers of Holland. From the corner Psarofaghis missed the lay line to the windward mark and the double tack allowed Payne back in. The two Mach 2 riders flew downwind towards the finish. Psarofaghis gybed for the line, Payne gybed inside and they crossed almost together. Psarofaghis won, Payne was second Boers was third and Lennon fourth.

Launch day!
Today the new Mach 2 Moth sailed for the first time. Designer Andrew McDougall's home club fittingly played host to the first sail..
Before we put her in the water it was nice to hear people remarking on her beauty. The uni directional carbon fibre hull finish is never something you tire of looking at. It always looks different depending on the angle, from shades of grey to stunning black. The systems all worked well but she looked so small compared to other Moths.

We've spent a lot of time getting the control systems right. The wand controls, hidden under the the bow bonnet for aerodynamic efficiency, are designed to make the boat easy to control. Below is a view of the wand control mechanism with the bonnet open..

There were cheers as designer Andrew McDougall foiled away from the beach into a punchy and bumpy 18-20 knot southerly breeze. A first sail in a new Moth is when sailor and boat really get to know each other for the first time, and the Mach 2 looked like a worthy partner. Driving hard upwind, in control, and flat.
Straight into race conditions, and race mode.
Of course all test sails wouldn't be complete without something going wrong .. Especially for a brand new design, and it did. In the last hours of putting the boat togther we couldn't find the stainless steel gantry fittings, so we made plastic ones. We knew the replacement plastic ones weren't as strong, and so it proved... We came in with the gantry in our support boat. Funny thing is we've now found the right fittings.
In a rope bag.
So it wasn't perfect, but as a test sail, we'll take it!
Thank you to all the members of Black Rock Yacht Club for their welcome and support.
More bend test pictures. We try to break a foil!
Foil Joints need to be ultra strong. Here's how we tested it.

Step 1. Push horizontal and vertical foils togther. No need to bolt. Place the tip of the horizontal foil on a sturdy bench. Grab head of foil in both hands.

Step 2. Get your balance...

Step 3. Lift yourself off the floor!

Mach 2 Foil pictures
This is a picture of the rudder foil assembly. It has been put together straight from the mould and has not had any finishing work done yet.
You can see the flashing which needs to be removed on the lifting foil but other than that it's all but perfect. Steel moulds make these fine finishes possible.
Mmmmm!
We've uploaded some pictures of a Mach 2 in production Here is the shell straight from the mould receiving some admiring glances!
More real pictures in the "showroom"

Mach 2 Gantry design revealed.
The Gantry for the Mach 2 is in production and this is what it looks like! Completely carbon fibre, the moulded joints are designed to allow simple, easy assembly together with the ultimate robustness and light weight.
First Mach 2 fleet
Hayling Island Sailing Club, on the South Coast of England, is shaping up to be the first sailing club with a "fleet" of Mach 2 Moths. Three Mach 2's are already on order, and will join the 13 strong foiler Moth fleet already sailing there.
